The Latest Drug Threat. Molly: Pure But Not Sweet

Have you heard about Molly?  It’s a pure form of MDMA (ecstasy), usually sold as a powder or in capsules.  Don’t let the gentle name throw you – Molly is highly dangerous and its use is on the rise.  The National Drug Abuse Warning Network announced that from 2004-2009, there was a 123% increase in the number of emergency room visits involving MDMA.  Usage is growing exponentially and so are the medical emergencies that Molly causes.

According to The Partnership at Drug Free.Org, the DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) considers MDMA a Schedule 1 controlled substance.  This means it has a high potential for abuse and no acceptable use as a medical treatment.  The DEA further states that MDMA causes confusion, anxiety, depression, paranoia, sleep problems and drug craving.  It can also cause muscle tension, tremors, involuntary teeth clenching, muscle cramps, nausea, faintness, chills, sweating and blurred vision.  In high doses, it can interfere with the body’s ability to regulate temperature, which can result in hyperthermia (a sharp increase in body temperature) which can lead to liver, kidney and cardiovascular failure.  When combined with crowed and hot conditions (like a rave) it can cause severe dehydration.
